Volunteering at Let’s Go Gardening
The Master Gardener Association of Wayne County’s 19th annual
educational outreach at plant centers,
Let’s Go Gardening (LGG) provides
community gardeners with a convenient opportunity to discuss plant concerns.
On Saturdays in May, MGAWC volunteers supply consumers with information that helps
set them up for a successful gardening season.
Participating garden centers offer their customers expanded services by hosting
trained volunteers. These garden centers also support the community by making a
donation to MGAWC, an all-volunteer non-profit organization that provides grants
to support gardening activities and offers educational programs for LGG
volunteers, plant center employees, and area gardeners. Each year, LGG
volunteers donate hundreds of hours to answer questions on topics such as plant
selection, plant placement, site preparation, and garden pests.
Leo Blum, an MGAWC member, established volunteer outreach at the point of sale
in 1987. Past schedulers include Sally Taylor, Barb Young, and Jesse &
Jerry Wright. The current coordinator, Nancy Kaczyinsi, can be reached at
.
To support volunteers answering questions at local nurseries, MGAWC provides
"Ask Me" buttons, a sign to put on the store door to let shoppers know that
Master Gardenerss are on-site, plus bookmarks with the MGAWC web site and
horticulture hotline numbers for five counties.
How You Can Help:
Set aside time on Saturdays in May to take a shift or two or
more with LGG.
Coordinator Nancy Kaczynski will have details on
specific shifts and sites available at
the April membership meeting.
This year volunteers will be able to answer
questions at seven locations.
With your support and participation, we can have another successful season of
Let’s Go Gardening.
