Bill Lumley
Bill was a long-time Master Gardener. He was among the first groups to go
through training in Wayne County. Many of you may have met Bill when he was
helping out with classes at Venoy. For years, Bill was the first volunteer
to arrive each week. He helped distribute materials and correct quizzes.
Like most MGs who never go volunteering without bringing tools, Bill was
usually seen with a three-hole punch for the inserts that would go into the
class binder.
Bill’s work with Master Gardeners was only a recent way he served others.
During World War II, Bill was in the Navy and received a purple heart. Once
the quizzes were ready for students, Bill might talk about the time he
served on an aircraft carrier when it was bombed. Bill was active with the
Wyandotte American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. Besides
gardening, Bill also enjoyed swimming.
Bill died January 13, 2009, at age 82. His lifetime of service will be
remembered.
